If you grew up in a Dominican homeâor youâve ever spent five minutes with a group of Dominicansâthen you know: we speak our own language. Dominican slang is fast, funny, flavorful, and full of personality.
Here are some of our favorite Dominican expressions that you wonât find in your Spanish textbook:
1. Vaina
The ultimate Dominican word. It can mean thing, mess, situation, problem, or basically... anything.
âPĂĄsame esa vaina.â âÂżQuĂ© es esa vaina?â
2. ÂĄTaâ Toâ!
Short for âEstĂĄ todo bienâ, it means âItâs all good.â We say this to agree, confirm, or just sound chill.
âNos vemos a las 6.â âTaâ toâ.â
3. Jevi
Cool. Awesome. Nice. Youâll hear this in any convo.
âEsa mĂșsica estĂĄ jevi, loco.â
4. Un chin
A little bit. Just a touch. And somehow always not enough.
âDame un chin de arroz, por favor.â
5. Diache
Our version of âDang!â or âWow!ââused for surprise or frustration.
âÂĄDiache, se me olvidĂł la cita!â
6. No bulto
No lie. No joke. Itâs real.
âYo fui al concierto, no bulto.â
7. Tiguere
A street-smart guy. Sometimes slick, sometimes trouble. Always sharp.
âEse tiguere no se le va una.â
8. Eâ paâ lante que vamos
An iconic phrase meaning: âWe keep going.â Through ups and downs, Dominicans always move forward.
Whether you say âtaâ toââ or âdiache,â your slang is part of your identity. At Yegodomi, we celebrate the way we talk, live, and loveâDominican style.
